After the great success of previous performances conducted by such illustrious guests as Philippe Jordan, Sir Colin David and Jonathan Nott, the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (GMJO) is returning to Bolzano Festival Bozen with two extraordinary concerts. On 21.08.10, Herbert Blomstedt will conduct Anton Bruckner's unfinished Symphony No. 9 as well as Gustav Mahler's "Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen". The soloist will be the famous baritone Christian Gerhaher. In the second concert on 24.08.10, Hilary Hahn, one of the most sought-after young violinists of our time, will play Brahms' Violin Concerto in D major. Paul Hindemith's "Mathis der Maler" symphony is also on the programme. The two concerts will set the tone for the GMJO's summer tour that will take it to many European festivals, including Salzburg, Dresden, Amsterdam and London.
Following in the footsteps of Sir Colin Davis, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Jonathan Nott, Gianendrea Noseda, one of the most established conductors of our time, will take the stand for the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) this year. The concert on 26th August will be entirely dedicated to the great East European composers of the 20th century. The programme will open with Mieczyslaw Karlowicz 's "Bianca da Molena" symphonic prelude, which will be followed by four portraits from Sergei Prokofiev's opera "The Gambler", based on Dostoevsky. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Pathétique, Op. 74 will bring the concert to a close.
